My new book, Motherhood, Apple Pie, and All That Happy Horseshit launches on May 4th, and while I can’t give too much away about the title since this story opens up the book, I can tell you that it is a personal story from my corporate job. I can also say that the title is derogatory on purpose, by adding “Happy Horseshit” to things that are traditional values, such as “Mom” and “Apple Pie”.

As I researched for this book, I found a reference to Motherhood and Apple Pie. Dating back to World War II, “mom and apple pie” was the answer soldiers gave to what they missed most back home. It was also the reason U.S. soldiers stated they were going to war, for “mom and apple pie”. It eventually evolved into a shorthand of sorts to explain American values and way of life.

Adding “Happy Horseshit” to the idea turned the phrase around and now makes you wonder if it really is talking about anything valuable. While the integrity of mom and apple pie is hard to argue with, “happy horseshit” makes you think maybe you should protest a little.

This book tells my story and the stories of many more mom business owners. Reading this book, you will understand that Motherhood and being a mom is one of the things I love the most, as it celebrates our special role and creativity in this world. I also love the Apple Pie concept as it exemplifies the opportunities we can bring to our lives through small business ownership. In fact, with the flexibility and freedom it provides, there is no better business for moms than eCommerce business. Lastly, as an avid gardener, I love the Happy Horseshit and how it encourages growth both for us in our personal and business lives!

In addition to the inspiring stories, you can learn from the “how to” component so you don’t have to figure it all out for yourself. We look at everything from how you manage your business and personal time, how you get the support you need, how you can use your personal values to ensure your business is in alignment and support your family life, and how to ensure you take care of your own physical and mental health.  We dismiss the idea of work / life balance and get serious about deliberately designing an integrated work and family life by understanding our priorities and what activities can bounce over to another day.  Being a mom is hard; being a business owner is hard. Somehow in a “non-math” way, doing both allows you to move through life on your terms and both things become just a little bit easier.
